Deportations. Part 1.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Pastor Martin Niemöller, Germany ~ 1940

They came for Jose and took him away, and I can be silent no longer.

Jose was my handyman for the past 10 years.  Jose was born in Mexico and came to the US in search of a better life for himself and his family.  Just like my grandmother and grandfather, who were born in Italy and came to the US in search of a better life for themselves and their family.

Jose learned to speak English, unlike my grandparents who never did.  Jose is a very hard worker.  He installed insulation in my attic, laid a hardwood floor in my living room, built a beautiful screened in porch.  And when I was recovering from back surgery, Jose cleaned the bathroom for me.

Like my grandfather, Jose is a good and decent man.  His son, born in the US and a US citizen, is living in Chapel Hill with his mother, without his father.  This family, a law abiding family, has been broken apart by the United States Government.

Our government once rounded up the Cherokee and cast them upon the Trail of Tears.  Our government once rounded up the Japanese and cast them into prisons.

As our Mexican friends and neighbors are being rounded up, let us not be silent.
